ISO 9001:2026 is now an official published standard. On 16 September 2026, ISO listed Quality management systems – Requirements as ISO 9001:2026 and marked ISO 9001:2015 as replaced. If you run a construction or engineering SME in Scotland or the wider UK and you hold (or are chasing) UKAS-accredited certification, that is the signal that matters. The old edition is no longer the current published requirements document.
This post is for owners and quality leads who just saw the ISO launch mail and want a calm next step, not a panic rewrite of every procedure.
What the ISO notification actually said
ISO Customer Service notified subscribers that ISO 9001:2026 was available from 16 September 2026 in online, PDF and ePub formats (English and other languages). The same notice listed ISO 9001:2015 as replaced by ISO 9001:2026.
Separately, ISO’s launch email confirmed that the official launch replay is available on demand, with jump points covering:
- why ISO 9001 still matters
- leadership and quality culture
- what is new in ISO 9001:2026
- efficient, integrated management systems across operations

What this does not mean for your certificate tomorrow
Publication of a new edition is not the same as your certificate expiring overnight. Transition rules, cut-over dates and how UKAS-accredited certification bodies will assess against 2026 still need to land in the usual UKAS and CB guidance channels. We covered that caution in our earlier note: ISO 9001:2026: wait for guidance before you rewrite the system.
Until your certification body sets out its transition plan, treat 2026 as “current published standard, transition path still being confirmed,” not as “fail the next surveillance if one clause wording differs.”
A sensible sequence for construction SMEs
- Get the real text (or a trusted summary from your CB). Do not redesign the QMS from LinkedIn threads or sales decks. Buy or access ISO 9001:2026 through ISO or your national member if you need the requirements wording.
- Watch the launch replay with a pen. Use ISO’s own jump points, especially “what’s new” and integrated management systems. Note what actually changes for how you work on site and in the office.
- Map change to your existing lean system. If your processes already show how work is planned, controlled, checked and improved, most of the migration is update and evidence, not inventing a second system.
- Ask your CB one clear question. “When do you expect clients on ISO 9001:2015 to transition to 2026, and what evidence will you want at the first visit after that?” Put the answer in your management review.
- Keep leadership visible. ISO’s launch put leadership and quality culture up front. For an SME that means the MD or contracts director can explain how quality decisions get made, not that you add another policy no one reads.

For a West Lothian, Edinburgh, Glasgow or central belt contractor, the next move is still practical: obtain the text or CB brief, note what is new, align your lean system, and lock the transition date with your certification body. Do not rip up a working QMS on day one.
